Over the holiday I had the wonderful fortune to meet up with Abby (hands down the funniest lady I know) & her partner Eric (now the smartest person I know...he does important science stuff.) Originally it was to be a Boston Engagement Session, but schedules and life got in the way, so we postponed until December where we could meet up in beautiful Western Pa in the midst of dreary winter. This part of the country is not known for its blue skies and cheerful days, but we managed to have a lovely afternoon in beautiful Preston Park thanks to the fact that this couple would shine even on the darkest of days!

Littles Session: Pittsburgh, PA

I love when families invite me back to document how their Littles have grown. Such is the case with these two! What amazing tiny humans they are. These two have so much in common, but yet even at such young ages their individual personalities completely shine through. After being inside we headed into the brief bright sunshine and had a gorgeous blue sky for the last 30 mins of our session.Oh yeah, and I must mention that their dad is an amazing sports and family chiropractor. A few weeks ago Mara, her mom and I spent a few hours passing the time in Kendall Square. Being there on a beautiful day during lunch meant we were serenaded by outdoor live jazz and lots of curious onlookers. So fun!

A current freshman at Wagner College , Sarah took a few hours out of her busy "packing and moving her entire life" schedule to check in with me a few days before heading out to school. Her almond shaped eyes are cat like and amazing!!!! Also, I must say that Sarah did her own makeup and it is faboosh. I need to ask her again what kind of foundation she used (I am pretty sure she said it is a simple drug store, no frills brand) because I did not have to do a thing to her skin. The coverage and smoothness were amazing!!!

Boston Headshots: Luke

Luke is one of those infectious personalities that you can't help but smile when you're around him. A Theater Education Major at NYU, Luke is a "do gooder" who wants to enrich lives through the arts, maybe have his own theater company someday and along the way be part of great theater himself. Spending this summer as a server on Narragansett was not a bad way to pass the time and make some dough for his European back packing trek next year. (totally jealous!)

Last week was a marathon headshot day with three fabulous young actors, Evyn, Emily and Noah. We had a blast together and my buddy and wedding boss Kevin Trimmer even came to help me out. Good times!!! Evyn and Emily are both going off to college in the fall and St Michael's in Burlington VT and Berekely College of Music right here in MA will have the pleasure of these two young talent's. Noah still has one more year of high school before he chooses his college, but he is diligent and excited by his prospects. I loved all three of them and even took a few group shots just for fun!!!!

Engagment Session: Fairhaven, MA

A few Sundays ago I spent a lovely late afternoon with the incomparable Megan & Eric. Megan and I shared a flat a while back when Eric was still courting her, so when they finally decided to tie I was overjoyed. These two are the type of couple perfectly matched; a yin and yang of qualities which add up to a truly loving partnership. What I love about Megan & Eric the most is their innate ability to make each other laugh...as you will see! (and Megan has a great infectious laugh!) When Eric would come over to our place on the weekends they would truly crack each other up the entire time. They take themselves just seriously enough to get through the day, but at the end of it would prefer to snuggle on the couch with a carton of ice cream enjoying Days of Our Lives (Megan converted Eric) or Biggest Loser. Their wedding is planned to be understated and lovely with just the right amount of "billions to budget" ratio! After our session at Fairhaven High School ( a great locale for engagement pics, by the way) they took me out to dinner at Fathom's Grille on the water in Fairhaven to catch up. It was excellent!!! Much love to you both!

Spring Awakening: Un-Common Theatre Company: Foxboro, MA

If you are in or around the Foxboro, MA area this weekend...heck, even if you are not, you should make the effort to head to the Orpheum Theater for Un-Common Theatre Company's production of Spring Awakening. It is going to be a fantastic show! Un-Common's 31 year reputation of producing quality productions helped them garner the rights, before any other amateur theater company in the country to produce Spring Awakening. Thank you very much to producer Chris Lowey for pulling that off! A mature cast of young adults ranging in age from 16-21 have worked diligently over the last weeks with their fearless director, the incomparable Christa Crewdson, to bring integrity, honesty and dimension to what can at times be a very one-note script. Esther Zabinski and her assistant Sarah Grina drilled the musical numbers and as a result the music by Duncan Sheik totally soars. Costumes were designed by Matt Timmons and his incredible seamstress assistant, seamstress Nancy McCarthy. The cast is led by Un-Common newcomers Brendan Duquette, Emily McDonald, and Matt Goldstein. Spring Awakening is well worth your time this weekend...but don't bring your Littles. (unless you are fully prepared to answer this question on the ride home: "Mommy, why was that man on top of her with his pants down!"...yeah, l thought you might think twice)

Boston Newborn Photographer: 13 days young!

Someone recently told me that if you take what I say on a daily basis completely out of context I would sound pretty crazy. Take for example, what I said about this Little. "He was awesome, yes, he peed all over me, but that's okay, I'm used to it...plus I needed to shoot him naked." If that was overheard by the wrong person they might call the authorities! This Little rocked, though and I was so excited to be invited over not even three weeks into his life. He was just so itty bitty and fabulous...very cold, though...I need to invest in a tiny heater for my newborns! I am also working on a NEWBORN PROJECT so if you know of anyone delivering before July please send them my way.

A few weeks ago my friend and colleague Beth started spouting off on The Facebook about "a summer theater camp for kids" which she and her husband are overjoyed about. To be clear, Beth is always excited and so I wasn't sure whether the camp was extra special or just Beth being Beth. So, I started doing my research and found that this camp is the real deal and is totally over the top exciting! This camp is not just a group of people who love theater "throwing together a show and hoping that it works out." Quite the contrary, in fact. This is a group of 5 incredibly talented and passionate theater professionals, who after much diligence and a big leap of faith, have decided to move forward with their dream of this camp. Love it! I was so flattered when Beth rang me and asked me to be involved. A resounding "Let's do it!" was screamed through the phone and we booked the shoot. What a fun time we had. I think these are "my people!" If you or someone you know with kids lives near Taunton, I highly recommend you sign them up for this amazing summer program. It's filling up quickly. Boston Headshot Photographer: Singer-Songwriter, Filmmaker

For the last few weeks I have been a bit "m.i.a," but I promise things are calming down and I will be back to posting more regularly asap! To tide you over, here is a quickie session I did recently. It's my big brother, Rue! Not that you needed me to tell you he's older, I mean he absolutely looks waaaay older than me, eh?! He's an amazing songwriter, incredible filmmaker, movie trivia and music extraordinaire and...growing up he sure did sit through every single one of my ridiculously long dance recitals! [I think this had more to do with the other girls in tutus than me, but still.] Oh yeah, and one time we were at a rock concert and he got called up on stage and they said he could pick someone to join him and he totally picked me! All the girls swooned at how sweet he was. Wait a second...I think that was ultimately about the other girls too! I am sensing a pattern here: "be sweet to sister, score points with the ladies!" hmmm...I think we need to have a chat. Rue was born for the spotlight. I mean he is seriously the first person ever who didn't even feign discomfort in front of my camera! Check out his music. Click here to listen to FOREVER- my personal favorite. The lyrics give me goose bumps. We should all be so lucky to be loved like this! (yes, we are a romantically delusional lot. We get it honestly...my dad would bring home flowers to my mom and write notes to her on a regular basis...and still does! Boston Family Photographer: American Family Series* Stapletons II

I certainly did say that there would be more of the Stapletons and then absolutely forgot to upload my favorite image from their session! It's hard to explain my connection to this image, but it makes my heart smile when I look at it. I think there is something to the story of Little-J looking at his dad and everyone else looking at the camera. It's like he is "checkin to make sure his dad is still there" or something. I don't know; it's completely up for your own interpretation. Ultimately I see love and that's what this family is all about.

Boston Family Photographer: American Family Series* The Stapletons

Saturday morning was a bright and early Littles/Family session in southern Mass and I could not wait to get started.It is always incredibly helpful to shoot for a family who allows me the comfort and freedom to make their home conducive to the shoot. This means, moving furniture around sometimes to help facilitate the best light or "art directing" the scene a bit to make for the best overall color/style. The Stapletons were a dream in this area. I suppose with two boys running around, having another person to add to the mix for a couple of hours didn't seem like much of a burden. They are so laid back and allowed me complete free reign of their beautiful, naturally lit home. (I totally took advantage) I also witnessed a six year old boy eat sausage links like they were the last meal he was ever going to have ! It was awesome, but I have no doubt his tummy was feelin it later.

Not only is this collage a great blog image, but it's also one of my favorite new products. It is a 30x30 flush mount collage. It doesn't even need a frame! This collage is a great way for families to showcase their kids or their event and have a ton of images all in one place.

This collage is included as an option in THE BABY PLAN and an a la cart items for all regular sessions. Love it!

Massachusettes Senior Portraits: Mariah is not Bitter

Today I thought it would be fun to do a post about Mariah's name and how because of its' meaning, she was destined become the tremendous young woman that she is. However...I did not actually know what her name meant until I looked it up. Sadly, at one location I found her name to mean BITTER; and a second location turned up: "Mariah means rebellious and bitter it comes from Old English." hahaha. WHAT? The problem is this- I know Mariah a bit and she is absolutely neither of these attributes- not even the slightest bit. I am not certain what to do now because I had assumed that because my name means "youthful one" and it is 100% accurate (wink wink) that everyone's name represented them correctly...not so much apparently.

Not to be thwarted, I will simply choose the opposite: Mariah is nothing like her name suggests! She is absolutely the loveliest young woman and a person of strong character...not bitterness and/or rebellion. Her wit balances her tremendous brain which makes her humor incredibly poignant, funny, and an incredible asset to her Improv troupe. Mariah's goal is to study stage management next fall and it is a nail biter right now to find out which school will be lucky enough to have her on their campus. Whichever she chooses I am certain that armed with her skills, her incredible laugh and optimistic outlook, Mariah will certainly enjoy whatever life offers next.

Massachusettes Senior Portraits: Sarah Alice

Alrighty, onward with my amazing Martha's Vineyard Seniors! Take a good hard look at Sarah Alice. She's not just a down to earth, funny, sweet gal with an amazing smile...she's got the head of a scientist on those shoulders and is planning to be a Marine Biologist! Really!!! I don't know any marine biologists so I was thrilled to drill her with questions. She says she caught the "science bug" early on when one of her school science teachers made the class accessible to her in a way she had not found the subject to be before. ("yay" for amazing teachers!) Plus, growing up on The Vineyard provided her with constant exposure to the water and she was able to feed her passion even more. The University of New Haven will have the pleasure of Sarah Alice in the fall and I truly wish her all the luck in the...ocean! (if there is pun/play on words to be found...I will find it)

Massachusettes Senior Portraits: Martha's Vineyard

SENIOR PORTRAITS are awesome! Yes, you're correct, I say the same thing about LITTLES and ACTORS, but in truth I absolutely love all three aspects of my business for very specific reasons. Senior Portraits are a ball game unto themself because Seniors are so incredibly varied. Each of them is grappling with different questions in regards to who they want to be and how they want to exist in the world. And since I am an "invasive question asker"...I get all up in there and try to really discover what makes them tick. Take Ashley for example. She has no idea where her life is going to take her, but she's open to the possibilities. Northeastern is first on her list, but maybe she'll end up somewhere else. Who knows! She may feel pressure to "pick a path" but she wears the pressure well and it doesn't come across on her face as anything that overwhelms her. She says she's learned a lot about herself in the last few years and is working on being a better communicator. Personally, I think her images communicate her message very clearly. "I am Ashley; pay attention!"

And my absolute favorite....BAM!!!!

Boston Headshot Photographer: Providence Session

Sam is a writer and pursuing this passion as a Literary Arts major at Brown University...based on this knowledge we can all assume that he totally rocks! Not one to often be in front of the camera I thought it might be difficult to draw him out and chat. Alas...this was not the case. In Providence by way of Los Angeles, Sam was easy to talk to and shared stories about life, films, his excellent breakfast making abilities (and by breakfast he means "solely eggs!") and the fact that being an occasional DJ does not qualify as playing an instrument. The only point where we caught a little tension was when he seemed to speak ill of Jason Mraz for a moment and I was all "don't go there, he's perfect"...and so we quickly moved onto what quintessential movies I should see. I am instructed to watch Boogie Nights and focus on it's epic nature as well as become acquainted with Alfred Hitchcock. (he promises they won't scare me). Although writing is his passion, Sam is certainly open to finding his dream career the "round about way" if need be...meaning a few years on a TV show wouldn't be anything to sneeze at. With that, I give you multitudinous Sam...multitudinous indeed! (his word)

Boston Headshot Photographer: Sell This House

No matter what line of work you find yourself in, how you present yourself visually is of the utmost importance. Oftentimes a photo is all someone has to go on before making a decision whether to be in touch with you. How much better for you and for your potential client when you have a professional image which goes the extra mile in telling your story. If people need to trust you, people need to see a piece of who you truly are in that first impression picture. Which leads me to Robin- one of Coldwell Banker's top Residential Brokers in Cambridge, MA. With over 20 years of experience under her belt Robin knows what she is talking about and her clients not only respect her, but 100% trust her. However, when someone recently told her she was much better looking in person than in her image...she knew it was time for an "image adjustment!" Of course it is always nice to "look better in person", but not so much when first impressions are your business. I think Robin was a little skeptical to my laid back methods, but I think I won her over in the end.

Now; I am not a pet photographer. (I would run the risk of dogs or cats in clothing on a regular basis and I just can't handle it) However, there are exceptions to every rule and Dario was not dressed up and was so good during my session with Robin that I couldn't resist. You tell me how to say "no" to this face!

Boston Portrait Photographer: Stop, Drop & Roll

While I was on the Vineyard, a few sessions popped up that I had not expected; this being one of them. Scott, the Assistant Fire Chief in Edgartown, MA asked me whether I had time to take a few shots of him in his formal uniform and I was happy to oblige. As a fireman and lifelong resident of The Vineyard, Scott is a respected pillar of the community. He is also an amazing dad to Alley (click here for her) loving husband to Donna and all around jack of all trades. (are we surprised?) He saves lives for goodness sake, of course he can do anything. Originally, the plan was to simply shoot in the house and create a great portrait, but I woke up the day of our session with a more exciting idea. If you're going to shoot a fireman and he has a big white truck with lights and official license plates...well, that's a no brainer people!

First up is Alley's Headshots! At 13, Alley has decided (with the support of and no pressure from her parents) that she is interested in pursuing this "Broadway thing"...(as she calls it). So her mom contacted me to see whether I would be willing to come to Martha's Vineyard for a session- to which I promptly replied, "yes please!" So a short T, Bus, Ferry and Car ride later...I was at their house! (incidentally, there is WIFI on the Ferry! Isn't that incredible? I mean I "get it" we live in that kind of world now, but it is still pretty amazing) But I digress...back to Alley. Now, I've seen this gal on stage so I can say with confidence that she's a talented young lady and I do not doubt for a minute that she will work in the business if she chooses to. On a complete side note: I don't think that I have ever in my life said that I would go back to middle school, but honestly, to be friends with Alley, I totally would. She is so fun to be around and her giggle is infectious! If I was casting director I would hire her based on her freckles alone. Good luck Alley!!!

Boston Headshots: Emerson College Admissions

Last week Emerson College generously invited me back to shoot more corporate headshots for their admissions staff. "Yay" ( I love working for the team at Emerson) What I love about shooting for Emerson is that they allow me to deviate from the standard corporate headshot and put my own spin on it. Formal is great, in certain situations and there are people who do it amazingly, but I personally excel in a much more relaxed environment. In January I shot all of the seasoned members of the admissions staff, but recently they have added some fabulous new energy to their Graduate and Undergraduate teams and needed to officially welcome them... by having their photos taken. Diverse backgrounds all, they each bring a valued skill set to the admission's office which supports the team atmosphere and also makes for a very fun office environment. What was incredibly clear to me as I spoke to each of these new staffers is their commitment to and passion for the bigger picture of the work they do each day. Emerson is great school..."yes I am biased because I went to graduate school there." But I ask you this: "Don't we trust the man who is not only the Hair Club president, but also a client more than we would someone who has no basis for their claim...I think we do!" enjoy*

You are going to think for a second that you're in the wrong location because the images this week are quite a departure from anything you have seen me do before. But it's a good thing! At times, I say "yes" to projects when I feel they are inspiring or will challenge me creatively and this one fit both criteria perfectly. The project was to shoot images which will then be used to create production posters for the ground breaking repertory productions of RENT & LA BOHEME at Baldwin Wallace College next year. To execute the actual creative concept a ton of prep was required and since there are few things on this earth I love more than researching for a project, I could not wait to get started. (I have never spent so much money on fashion magazines in my life. Vogue Italia alone is like $15...but now I am hooked!) However, it was a fantastic pre-production process, 100% required and one that I absolutely did not do alone. I would be remiss if I didn't give a big shout out to my colleague Leah Haydock for equipment borrowing, as well as the fabulous Boudoir photographer, Dawn Norris for the equipment, DVDs and the hours of her time discussing lighting and fashion at Mr. Crepe. Also,the movie The September Issue played a fun role in the process. What a great time! Let's see... I think I will start out with the character MAUREEN-played at some performances by the sassy, ginger haired Andrea Leach. Enjoy*

Boston Second Shooter: I Like Cake PART I

I say PART I because I can not imagine that this is the one and only time I will reference my favorite part of the wedding celebration...the cake. Now please do not misunderstand and write to me saying that I value food over people. What is true to say is that the bride & groom are wonderful and always beautiful and if I was a wedding photographer I would be all over them. However, Leah is their photographer and she rocks...so as a second shooter I have a few extra luxuries...one of which is being able to love the cake the most! When I first started working with Leah she would let me know that my job was done by saying "you are dismissed after the cake cutting! " She now says to me "Go have your cake!" :)

Boston Portrait Photographer: Love Thy Neighbor

When I was an actor in NYC right out of Undergrad (more years ago than I would like to count, thank you very much) I, even now, distinctly remember how I felt after a few years in "the business." Disclaimer: I am not speaking of anyone's experience but my own. When, after pounding the pavement and doing everything I thought I could to make things happen for myself and still not succeeding in the way I had pictured, in the time frame I wanted, in the plays that I liked...I grew kind of resentful. As a result...I stopped loving my neighbor: meaning...my fellow actors & friends. I was so me-centric, insecure and dumb that I completely lost the joy of my friends' successes. I was young, yes and had some growing up to do, but when a success for them started to register as a failure for me, I knew something was very wrong with my thinking. That wasn't how I wanted to exist in the world. I had grown increasingly desperate, jealous, unhappy and self absorbed; and no fun to be around. So I made a change. I stepped back, saw myself for who I was becoming, didn't like it, took a hiatus and moved to Colorado. (that story is for another day) This is all by way of saying...while I still struggle with measuring up to my own expectations of myself as a photographer and as human in general, I am far happier these days. I have mentors who intimidate the heck out of me, but I no longer feel resentful or angry because I recognize that everyone's path is different. I no longer look at my career as a race. I made the choice, when I started this career to "know better and do better" this time around. I am a grown up now and recognize that a life filled with rejoicing in the success of others, colleagues and otherwise, is way better than the alternative. Thank goodness I figured it out! enjoy*

Boston Portrait Photographer: Engagement Session

As you may remember from a few months ago (if not click here to get up to speed) Patrick, Amanda and I spent a lovely morning at Logan Airport shooting a fun couples session a few months ago. Patrick had just moved to Boston and it was a way to welcome him to the city and solidify the new chapter of their relationship...in the same state! So...although it was brewing in the back of my mind, no talk of an actual engagement was ever mentioned. Well, dear readers...UPDATE ALERT!!!! Because of how beautiful they look in photographs together, (and probably a little because they are nuts about each other too) Patrick has asked Amanda's father for his blessing (in Espanol no less) and a mere month ago proposed to Miss Amanda. She said "yes" and tickle me pink...they are getting hitched next October! If you've been a faithful reader then you are well aware that I do not pass up an opportunity to celebrate (or eat cake)... so here on my blog I am bringing this couple back so you can celebrate them too! Feel free to send all congratulatory gifts to me and I will..ahem...of course, pass them along. (spatula and curling iron much needed) :)

Honestly, even with a graphics tablet it is way harder to "write" in Photoshop than I anticipated. I felt like a 6 year old learning my letters for the first time. It's worth it, though...I mean there has to be an "engagement ring shot."

Hey all- I have received a few concerned messages asking me why I have not been blogging. Truth be told, I have simply been incredibly busy with Actor Headshots & Children's Portrait work & clients always come before blogging! But alas...I am back and have committed to blogging every weekday for the next 2 weeks. "Wow!"

A few weeks back I attended a Speedlight workshop at Lens Pro To Go hosted by JVS & Anne. I signed up last minute and knowing there was only space for 15 attendees, crossed my fingers that there would be one space open. Thank goodness there was! The entire day was devoted to off camera lighting and I was sufficiently terrified, of course. However, I would rather make mistakes in a workshop I was paying for rather than make mistakes with clients who are paying me. I knew this workshop would help with my headshot work in Boston, but also had an inkling it would come in handy elsewhere too. During the day I screwed up and dropped things, laughed while throwing my partner Sheryl under the bus when I set up the Cheetah Boom backwards and got frustrated when I could not grasp the manual settings when using Radio Poppers! But that's what workshops and education are for, eh? Little did I know that within 2 months I would be designing a commercial shoot lit entirely by speedlights! Funny how life connects the dots like that, huh?!

The below shots were all taken by my partner for the day, Laura Linney look alike, Sheryl Widberg. They are ridiculous, I know, but I ask you: How else was Sheryl going to get a good sense of the capabilities of the Orbis Ring Flash Adapter? I was doing her a favor. What if she has a client with crazy prescription peacock feather eyeglasses!!!? As photographers, we need to be prepared for every scenario, my friends!? (I used to be an actor-I know how to have all the emotions.) hahahah

Business Headshots: Boston, MA

I grew up in a little town in Western Pennsylvania. Stavros grew up in Greece. He wins! School field trips to the actual Acropolis and Parthenon are just a little cooler than mine to the IMAX at The Carnegie Science Center! I mean really?! Needless to say, I was excited to meet this guy and sure did try to get him to book his session in Greece. (wouldn't that have been great?) Stavros needed images to support his new business venture and I was oh so happy to oblige. Said business is a political organization, not a political party and while I understood at the time...um....yeah...not so much at the moment. I very much wish that I had thought to read up on the government in Greece because it would have come in very handy. Okay, so I don't really understand yet what his business is going to be, but I commit to figuring it out once his website is up. If the research takes me all the way to Greece; so be it! I will do the hard jobs to bring the story to my readers! enjoy *

The Senior Portraits of Amanda: Pittsburgh PA

Unfortunately, deferring to the weather is a reality of my job. (not one I like, mind you, but a reality nonetheless) Such was the case a few weeks ago when Amanda and I had one and only one day to shoot her Senior Portraits. The entire week had been gorgeous, but on Thursday, of course, the sky opened up and showered us with its' abundance. I refused to give up hope and knew that "if we could just get in an hour" we would be fine. To my incredible delight we got that hour and then some. YAY!
A bit about Amanda: Honestly, she has no idea how fabulous she is, which is amazing to me. Something is wrong with our society when young women seriously haven't got a clue how cool they are! She is awesomely down to earth and tres smart (see how I used French there? Amanda speaks it fluently and so I wanted to give her a little "shout out!" It means very for those single linguists out there :) ) And my goodness people, if I had even half her brain I would be shouting it from the rooftop; but Amanda is very reserved about her extreme mental capacity (i.e MENSA member thank you very much) and can talk equally enthusiastically about studying chemical engineering next year at Purdue as she does about boys. Wait...that's not true...she is more excited about chemical engineering. :) It's refreshing and hysterical and made me kinda want to be back in high school just so I could be friends with her. enjoy*

Thank you to the Succop Conservancy for the fabulous location...and also to the bank that owns that abandoned house on Route 68...shhhh!

everyone had a great "up for anything" attitude and do not complain even once...that I heard. ;)

everyone promised to provide me free tickets..."oh wait..there I go again!"

BW: Headshots: Cleveland Ohio Part I

Baldwin Wallace College has got it goin' on! They are fierce, I tell ya...and this group has two more years of school. How awesome to get to shoot them all just as their careers are about to explode. When I was invited by Victoria Bussert, the incomparable head of The Baldwin Wallace Musical Theater Department, to shoot headshots for her sophomore Musical Theater Majors I jumped at the chance. So two weeks ago I became very devout and prayed for perfect weather as I headed to The Buckeye State to shoot 18 full headshot sessions in 2 days. It was awesome and wonderfully exhausting! Loved it...but I never could have done it without "the team" ! To my immense joy, I was able to secure Tom Nevels (makeup artist extraordinaire) to fly in from North Carolina just to "do" all the faces. And then...there was James; the student who had no idea what he was in for when he was assigned to "assist me" for the weekend. I told him breezily that his job was to "collect the checks," "pick up lunch" & generally "keep me on schedule" (because I tend to completely lose track of time while I am shooting) It sounds simple enough, right?...The first two were easy, but the third...yeah, I neglected to mention that when I get tired of a spot I tend to go "exploring for different locations" and as a result am, at times, difficult to find. More than once James arrived sweating and out of breath because he had run all over campus trying to find me. But we were always on schedule! ;) (don't tell him, but this was fun for me..and also when I told him "Nick hasn't shown up for his shoot because he hadn't called and reminded him" which was a total lie and Nick was just changing his shirt...yeah, that was fun too!) enjoy*

The following series needs a little explaining because it becomes bananas by the end. Keep in mind that the actual purpose of the whiteboard was simply so that I could stay organized! I am good with names, but with a large group you never know and I wanted to be sure that all images ended up in the correct folder on my hard-drives and such...so I decided I would just click off one image at the top of the session and be done with it. You were never supposed to see these images! But after viewing them...I knew it was impossible to keep them to myself. They started out conservative and then James got "creative" (shall we say) and...um, he brought the whole motley crew with him! You'll see what happened. It is hysterical and might become something I continue in their honor. So without further ado I will let the whiteboard speak for itself...

I highly recommend that you return the rest of the week in order to see these faces up close and personal...and the snippets of things I am going to tell you about each of them will having you rolling in the aisle.
I was very clear that their final images are going to help them get work and as such I am entitled to a free ticket to any show they are in! YAY! Now that it is on my blog it is "officially binding" (sneaky!)

John & Kate: Crane Estate: Conclusion

The toasts by Maggie and David consisted of the following key words/phrases: boobs, underwear, naked, and the jingle for Pabst Blue Ribbon! (and some mushy stuff too) I highly recommend using these words and phrases at your next corporate event. They certainly grab everyone's attention!

My assistant for the day was Lauren from Monin photo and she captured this lovely storytelling image.

You're going to look at this cake and say "cool...and there are shells on it" but when I tell you "those shells are EDIBLE" you will then say "WHAT?? That's crazy talk, Julia." Yes, yes it is, but it's true....contact Cakes by Barbara for your very own.

Feels a little 1950s to me...I can't help but smile at John's exuberance!

John & Kate: Crane Estate: Part I & II

I need to be very clear about something before I continue sharing John & Kate's wedding festivities...I am emotionally invested in my work. In particular I am hopeless when it comes to love. I am all for it. I believe everyone deserves to experience it and I believe that it can, in fact, "Build a Bridge" (thank you Judds) True love gives me goose bumps, hand holding makes me smile, genuine kindness, joy and appreciation for one's partner takes my breath away; and all of these things are typically partnered with tears. So when the vows started and John & Kate both opened by saying: " I take you to be no other than yourself, " it is only by the grace of God that I kept shooting. How awesome and generous is this to say to another human being? In my humble opinion, these words are what it means to be a partner ...and I say "I will have me some of that, please!" John & Kate are my new love role models...they can be yours too. enjoy*

Boston Wedding: Exchange Conference Center: Kevin & Danielle

Another collaboration with the fabulous Leah Haydock. This time at the beautiful Exchange Conference Center on the waterfront in Boston. Leah keeps inviting me back to second shoot and I am always thrilled to spend time with her...and her fabulous eyelashes. For full wedding coverage of Kevin & Danielle's wedding please click on the word BLOG. What a fun wedding this was. I had such a great time that I completely forgot to sample the cake...travesty!!

Rene Rancourt, the National Anthem Singer for the Boston Bruins, was brought in by Kevin to surprise Danielle and she was blown away. He even stayed and sang a few extra Sinatra tunes. What a crowd pleaser!
Admittedly, I became a little fascinated with Danielle's adorable daughter and spent a lot of time thinking about what it must be like for her to watch her mom get married. Especially since Kevin is clearly smitten with her as much as he is with Danielle. She looked at her mom with a sense of "awe" all day and Danielle was so incredibly lovely and made her feel so special and a part of the festivities.

It made me think about how as little girls we get dolled up, put on beautiful dresses and dance...

And sometimes it's fun when we're all grown up too...

Providence RI::Headshots:: Leigh

You know how there is always at least one person in a classroom who doesn't speak very often, but when they do you know it's important?....yeah, that's Leigh. We actually did meet in a classroom and I was so drawn to her quiet brilliance that I just wanted to sit next to her every day and see if her ideas would rub off on me. She's quirky and unsure while at the same time incredibly grounded. She uses her hands, while wearing amazing rings, to try to figure out her thought process as she is talking and she shakes her head and says "Oh...I don't know, but what about: (insert something brilliant and thought provoking and timely and effortless") ...and then everyone in the class is better off because she spoke up. Leigh doesn't think she is an academic which is what makes her so approachable and funny and successful. Her one woman show: How to be a lesbian in 10 days or less is a fantastic self composed piece of theater which seamlessly weaves humor, personal biography and dance. I have seen it and loved it! She has already performed it in Boston and Providence and will hopefully continue to share it with the world. But on the flip side, Leigh is incredibly down to earth and speaks with passion about her love for Will & Grace, specifically her twin at heart Sean Hayes, and how she is obsessed with the Lifetime movie What Makes A Family...well, basically anything Cherry Jones will do...or Mary Louise Parker...or Sarah Paulson...Oh and lest I forget..."NO, her tattoo has nothing to do with the Ani Difranco song. Stop asking!"

JOHN & KATE:: Jamaica Pond: Engagement [Boston]

With three different schedules to coordinate, I was a bit concerned that we wouldn't work out an engagement session before John & Kate's late August wedding, but thankfully the stars (and the weather) aligned for us yesterday morning at the beautifully picturesque Jamaica Pond. This is a fun couple...lovey and affectionate without being prompted and always making each other laugh. "Foreheads together and gaze affectionately" would not be something they would ever do! So we just had fun. They are so in love it's ridiculous...in a good way. Their laughter is infectious and when I am around them I seriously can not stop smiling. Just by looking at the images, you will catch yourself laughing...I know it! They respect each other so much and have built their relationship upon a rich, life long friendship which over time has led to a deep love and partnership. Amazingly...it almost "wasn't." As so often happens when we know someone awesome, we want to set them up with other awesome people in our lives. Kate almost did just that, but luckily stopped and said: "what the heck am I doing?!" Stay tuned in the coming weeks for their wedding weekend festivities; which I have the privilege to shoot! I am beyond excited. Highlights will include: A piano bar, an Inn, a Beach and a Clam Bake...."yeah, you should definitely check back!"

New Jersey: Headshots: Alison

And are we really surprised? She's got leading lady written all over her face. This resplendent blonde is definitely a Clara, my friends...not a Fosca. (Again, I am speaking into existence shows that I would go back on stage for and Alison seemed to be on board with my idea to mount a production of Passion...in her backyard...for our parents and the neighborhood dogs). What a delicious morning in Hoboken! I have been crossing my fingers that someone would be willing to leave the city for a shoot here and then low and behold, Alison actually lives in this gorgeous town. Fantastic! After having her "face did" by the uber-amazing, intoxicatingly fabulous Tiffany Bartok...[as a side note: I have said it before and I will say it again "do not ever underestimate the necessity for a great make up artist for your session." Tiffany is great. You should contact her whether you use me or not...but you should use me too. ] Back to Alison: After a temporary hiatus from the career she loves, Alison is back in full force and honestly, booking every job she auditions for. The only thing that could stop her is the lack of tall leading men...ugh! Currently, she is in rehearsals for The King and I at Somerset Valley Playhouse...go see it!...where she plays Tuptim...hahhah...just kidding, Anna.( actually I played Tuptim in high school...nope, you're not crazy, I am sure not Asian! Gotta love the suburban schools and their plethora of diversity!) A Hofstra grad, Alison toyed ever so briefly with using her brains to be a lawyer, but just couldn't get "the business of show" outta her blood. She's lovely, people...just lovely, inside and out I can just tell!

NYC: Broadway: Headshots:: Kevin

Disclaimer: This post contains an obsessively geeky amount of "Musical Theater punning." If you do not enjoy this sort of thing you should probably just skip to the images.
Picture this: an incredibly lit early morning in Central Park; a perfect breeze blowing through the trees, the sexy sounds of a bluesy alto sax unobtrusively adding a soundtrack to your day... "Isn't it Bliss?" Now add to this scene a casual hour or "A Weekend In The Country" perhaps, hanging out with the Broadway star, Kevin David Thomas and you will experience the joy that is my day today.( I am okay with it if you are a little jealous. You should be...he is adorable). At the tender age of 30, Kevin can already count himself a Broadway veteran. He debuted in the 2006 Les Miserable revival and can currently be seen 8 shows a week in the current revival of A Little Night Music. You would think this would make a person conceited or unapproachable, but he is very much neither. He takes in strides the ups and downs of being an actor and does not take anything for granted.(Ah.. "The Glamorous Life")

Kevin said he has trouble getting shots with him smiling so I knew I had to figure out how to make this happen. It wasn't hard... I just asked him about his favorite "ingenue lady" and he lit up. Any girl that can make a guy smile like this is probably pretty awesome.

New Jersey: Headshots: Kristen

For as much as I love shooting, I must say that my absolute favorite part of my work these days is creating my blog entries. I become so excited at my sessions and can not wait to get home, upload the images and share them! Yesterday was such an incredible 12 hour day with Kristen in Long Branch and all over Asbury Park, NJ that I truly spent the entire 90 min train ride writing this blog entry in my head...and falling asleep because I was exhausted. No matter which way I write this, it is not to possible express the amazingness that was my day with Kristen on a mere web page. So I decided to keep the actual day to myself and just talk about how awesome Kristen is! Here goes: A graduate of the prestigious Baldwin-Wallace Musical Theater Program, over the last 11 years Kristen has made an incredible name for herself as a professional singer. She has traveled the world on 5 different cruise lines, they continue to call her to come back, performed in countless shows both in and out of NYC and even had a 7 month stint as a showgirl in Vegas for the longest running Burlesque show in town...Jubilee. ( I know what your next question is and the answer is "NO" not that type of showgirl.) Since moving home to NJ she now spends her days teaching, loving her amazing scientist boyfriend, Darryl and their cat Wasabi ,who I saw play catch and it was really funny, and keeping her chops fresh by singing for pleasure. If you want to hear her fabulous soprano she will be singing in a show called "Gay and Be Glitter" with Cabaret for Life on July 30. The mission of this non-profit is to "bring talented people together to help those in need." If you happen to meet her and want a song...her "best 16" ends on a high "D"....so prepare to have your socks knocked off!

This one is for my Undergrad B.W. peeps who will recognize her expression right away as the consummate "Kristen smile." I think Kristen's favorite phrase to say is "I am so happy for you!" (and she means it every single time)

Looks like she can play, right?! Yeah, absolutely can not...yet. But she looks great and is going to take lessons so that she can rock out at Honey Child Music where she teaches music to Littles !

Si, Per Favore! Parte Uno

I am starting a new section on my blog and am excited that this worked out to be the first entry. I am calling the new section: "Si, Per Favor!" (Yes, Please! in English, but everything sounds better in Italian and I figure if I use the language it will help me physically get to the country) Basically, the idea behind these new entries is that I have the opportunity to share things which may or may not be related to photography, but I think they are fabulous and you should know about them. It is my duty to you, my diligent friends, clients and blog stalkers to enrich your life with more fabulousness. So without further ado, the first "Si, Por Favore!" entry is devoted to the fabulous wedding photographer and authentic British accented LEAH HAYDOCK. (in case the link on her name doesn't work go to: www.leahhaydockphotography.com) We met in December doing Help Portrait and I pretty much stalked her blog ever since. I admire her as a business woman, photographer and "budding friend." (if I may be so bold as to call her this). She is incredibly generous with her time, her techniques, her business and her awesome sense of humor. When she extended the invitation to me to join her for Zach and Kristin's Wedding a few weeks ago I was so excited to spend the day with her. I pretty much just watched her and was certainly more of a liability than an asset (sure did eat two huge pieces of cake) but I learned alot and look forward to working together again. But gosh, I really am going to be that person who never leaves a wedding without having tried the cake...twice.

A Filipino and an American meet on a boat... [NYC: Littles]

This NYC 2010 adventure is shaping up nicely and I sure do love that I have spent years of my life here and know exactly how to get around. Visiting a place like The Big Apple is way more fun when you know where you are going and can venture beyond midtown. Yesterday, on the hottest day ever, I packed my camera bag and headed close to the tippy top of Manhattan where I had a fabulous Little waiting for me in Washington Heights...with his mom, of course (If you happen to find yourself near W 190th St, you should absolutely check out the Cloisters ) At exactly 5 months, this Little is so sweet and giggly and fun I really did not want to leave. His hiccups and bowel movements alone were enough to entertain me for hours. While the Little "did his thing" mom and I chatted and I learned that she is a big wig for a fabulous organization here in NYC called The Actors Fund. (They offer services to those in the entertainment industry who are in need...awesome!) With a mom like this and a totally hip dad who takes care of him everyday before leaving for work himself, this Little is going to no doubt be a fabulous addition to the neighborhood jungle gym~

Feeling a little proud that I caught it before the inevitable drool.

No walking yet...but one of these days!

"Six Little Ducks that I once knew... [Boston: Littles Session]

Ever since my little's mom told me that she wanted to have her their session near the ducklings in the Public Garden I have been singing the "Six Little Ducks" song. I realize the statues are actually about the book Make Way for Ducklings, but I couldn't help humming just the same. (Ducks beget Ducks, I suppose.) It turned out to be a lovely Wednesday morning at 8 am ("No," that time is not a typo :) ) and I spent the session running around with one of my favorite almost 2 year olds...and goodness can he run. We saw lots of dogs and live ducks and mom almost had a heart attack thinking her little was going to fall into the water. (truth be told, I thought a fall in the water would provide some great images, but I realize this isn't the way to "win friends and develop repeat clientele")
For as much as I try to have ideas in my head for certain images, with littles I can not always predict what will happen. Turns out, a few of the images I ended up capturing without realizing it made me laugh out loud when I actually saw them on the screen. I hope they make you smile too. The one with his cute head leaning on the duck is just begging for the caption: "Dear God, make me a bird! " Wait till you see it!

Patrick & Amanda: Couples: Logan Airport [Boston]

First of all Patrick and Amanda are pretty much one of my favorite couples...and not just because Amanda is my friend and she paid me to say this. They like each other so darn much and are simply fun to be around. The dynamic duo have been doing the "long distance relationship thing" ever since Amanda moved from Maryland to Boston almost 2 years ago. Thankfully, this pair is the exception to the "long distance relationships don't work" mantra. With everything else in their lives, they fully committed to their relationship and managed to squeeze in weekends and holidays together whenever time, finances, and scheduling permitted. But now....(drumroll please) Patrick is done with grad school and has moved to Boston! YAY! This is not an engagement session, but rather a "celebration of togetherness session" and I think it is a perfect idea. When I asked Amanda where she wanted to shoot, she said "How about the airport? We spent a lot of time there coming and going and I think it is fitting for us." I was a little afraid that Homeland Security would throw us out, but figured "why not try!" Now I know Amanda pretty well, but truly did not expect that she was going to bring half of her shoe collection to this shoot. It was quite funny and I tried to remember to have her change them as often as possible simply to justify the fact that we had to carry them. Patrick was an AWESOME sport and clearly loves Amanda to death to even entertain the idea of doing the shoot in the first place. There were too many images to choose from so I included a lot..because it's my blog and I can!

Normally I would try to carry everything,but Amanda packed like she was going on a trip!That blue bag is just her shoes.

Totally random mirrored gate in the JetBlue Terminal. I saw it the day before and thought it was awesome. Figuring out where they needed to stand so I saw them in the mirrors and not myself or the people passing by was interesting too. They were actually about 15 feet in front of the wall.

Patrick's shot for the cover of PRESERVATION magazine. He is a Historic Preservationist. (cool, right?) His passion is keeping the integrity of historical buildings and making them into fresh, new, energy efficient buildings. Think the Liberty Hotel in Boston.

This image was actually in a burst of images shoot in succession. When I went through them it was like a dirty flip book because Patrick's left hand was pulling Amanda's dress over her knee. Very funny! (but this is a family blog so you're only seeing one shot!:) )

I like these three images for a variety of reasons. I think they tell an interesting story and are somewhat metaphorical for their relationship. "coming/going" "the fleetingness of time," "togetherness/yet separate." I'm sure I am over analyzing...:) The beautiful scarf was incorporated because it was a gift Patrick gave to Amanda and I thought it was fitting to have it around as much as possible.

"I want to be a good time gal...but not the dirty kind! ": This quote is only a mere glimpse of the hystericalness (made up word) that is Miss Meredith. She is hands down one of the funniest women I have ever met and I was thrilled when she contacted me for shots. She is equal parts brains and sass which is what makes her brand of humor so fun to be around. I remember being in class with her and crying from laughing so hard. Love it! We scheduled for Sunday morning and after waking up to a downpour, I crossed my fingers that the rain would first of all, stop and then after this hold off for a few hours so we could do our session! Thankfully, it did...just long enough for us to have some fun. Don't be fooled though, Meredith is not without a serious side. A newbie to the world of tattoos, she took the plunge a few weeks ago and didn't choose a smiley face for her foot, but rather a principle by which she wants to live her life: "Leap and the net will appear." The quote is inspired by her favorite professor and mine, Bethany Nelson. But then in the same sentence she'll tell you how she's proud to be a "muffin" (the name a colleague of hers has given to those exceptionally awesome people who love Musical Theater) and thus the conversation has shifted back to the lighter side. Personally, any gal who answers my question "name your top five musicals" with an incredulous "Of all time?..Oh my god that is so hard" is a girl I want to hang with.

Boston:: Headshots:: Rachel

"Can you stand without leaning on anything?"I actually said this to Rachel at one point during our session. Bananas!!! I got so caught up in having her lean against things that when there wasn't a wall or a door, I kind of freaked out. She was quick to retort, that "yes, indeed she was an ambulatory human and as such, could stand without additional structural support!" (people hire me for my eye, not my brain.) Friday was an incredibly perfect day and as the sun set in beautiful Cambridge, MA Rachel and I were livin it up and literally stopping traffic while we did it.(Really, Walden St had a detour and we were right there wavin at the cars) As you will see, Rachel has flawless skin, fabulous hair, amazingly deep hazel eyes and the awesome where-with-all to know when she looks good. (which is most of the time!) This was incredibly helpful and she even taught me a few things about really listening to what people say about themselves and not pushing my own agenda. She knew exactly how to move and could totally "smize" on command! Oh yeah, and before the session we even had a little "home economics" class as we, and by we I mean I, ironed the shirts that she had rolled up and thrown into a bag! hahaha. "Dear clients...please iron your clothes. They look so much nicer in your pictures and you and your photos will be happy that you did."

Jon & Stephanie: Engagement: Public Garden [Boston]

On a warm night in a San Diego karaoke bar a hot blond belted out the vocal stylings of Pat Benatar and changed her life forever.[Hit Me With Your Best Shot] Jon was in the bar that night and immediately took a liking to the twinkle-eyed Stephanie. And the rest, as they say, is history. However, there was a tiny glitch...Stephanie made it very clear from day one that she was moving to Boston for two years to go to grad school and was not about to change her plans for any man. This could have been the end of it for most couples, but Jon knew he had something special with Stephanie and, albeit difficult with the coast to coast distance, gave her his blessing as she boarded the plane...and then months later he proposed and she said "yes" and she finished school and Jon came for graduation and she called me up and said she wanted an engagement session and it was the only day we would ever be able to shoot because he was leaving the next day and....it RAINED! Ah well...we still had fun.

"Wonderful" is how Jon would describe Steph in one word...and I agree.

Girl's Weekend:: Cambridge

The pervasive power of friendship is one aspect of my life where I am continually amazed. What I have done to deserve the incredible friends who have either come into my life for a mere time, or have endured throughout the years, I can not say. All I know for certain is that I am wildly grateful and blessed to have a few people who have seen my "ugly cry" and love me anyway. I reflect on this because "Girl's Weekend, Boston 2010" allowed me to think about my own girlfriends even more. The shoot was an amazing opportunity to be a voyeur amongst a fabulous group of women who have been the best of friends practically since birth. Once a year these ladies make it a point to put their friendship first and choose a weekend to get together. This year was BOSTON!!! They've also created a "sisterhood of the traveling scrapbook" as such, and each get together is well documented with lasting memories for years to come!

It was clear from the moment I arrived that this was going to be a terrific afternoon and Megan, Andrea, Amanda and Anne did not disappoint. They were up for anything and everything and even "got their sass" on for a few shots just for fun. Not a harsh word amongst them, they simply laughed and worked it for the camera all afternoon.

In the 20 some odd years they've been friends there have been way more ups than downs and it is absolutely clear how much love, admiration, and respect they have for each other. And of course the day wouldn't be complete without a rousing round of Croc-a-dill-e-o-ma...just look, you'll see...

Just a typical fall day in New England...

When Mychal first asked me to shoot her dog Gretchen, I admit I was both intrigued and a bit nervous. I had visions of arriving at the location and there being a completely innocent little pup, humiliated in leather and lace, waiting for me with weepy eyes and a deflated spirit. So I laid down the law before I accepted the gig "NO ANIMAL CLOTHING OF ANY SORT!" (I made my father swear to this when we gave him his Beagle a few years ago and I couldn't possibly go back on my core values) Mychal is a recent transplant to Boston and since it turned out to be a gorgeous day on Sunday it was a no-brainer to have our session outside with the beautiful foliage. There isn't anything else quite like it and I thought it would be a great way to remember her time in New England when she looks back at these images in years to come. Gretchen and Mychal are quite a twosome and they were a hoot to watch play together...kinda made me want one of my own.

Um...yeah, the tree kind of made my LIFE!

Last weekend I took a road trip to Philadelphia in order to shoot one of my favorite events: the American Diabetes Association Annual Walk. It was fantastic this year and bigger than ever! 3,500 dedicated and compassionate souls rolled out of bed on a chilly Saturday morning to assert their commitment and passion to fighting this disease. Currently, nearly 24 million Americans' lives are threatened by diabetes and the numbers are rising at an alarming rate. Yet, with dedication to the cause and powerful organizations like the ADA we can press onward to find a cure. Congrats to Julie Heverly for spearheading a wonderfully successful event and special thanks to Kathleen, Jessica, Denise and the rest of the ADA staff for making me feel so welcome. The trip back to Boston was unfortunately, not as successful as my time in Philly had been, but I did learn an important lesson: NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT A GPS AND AN EASY PASS! (Three consecutive trips over the Tappan Zee Bridge really brought this lesson home for me!)

Denise, the energetic woman who drove me along the route, said to me: "Just run down the ramp to get the photos you want by the water." When we got there I looked out the window and replied: "umm??? Just run down the ramp, huh?" A few people were in the way!

It's never too early to join the fight...

We owe it to those who love us...

Boston:: Headshots: Cameron

Due to the fact that meteorologists are rarely accurate in their forecasting, Sunday ended up to be an incredibly beautiful day and I was not forced to cancel my much anticipated shoot with Cameron. The two of us have some very important loves in common (Musicals...Mraz...Michelle) and because of this, had a great time. It's not everyday some guy tells you that watching "Evita" is a good time! In fact, I can think of a few misguided friends off the top of my head who would rather chew glass than watch a musical. A successful photog himself, Cameron is a recent transplant to Boston (why stay in California when his main squeeze was all the way on the other side of the country?) and has established himself notably in the community. His current passion is his company FUTURISM PRODUCTIONS. He and his partner are highly sought after and specialize in films, documentaries, promotional videos for actors, musicians and authors and basically any other creative endeavor! Even though Michelle opted out for the day, luckily I was able to persuade her at the end and get a few shots of the two of them.

Marni Glo at the afternoon "PEEP SHOW":
Marni wore a skirt to her headshot session. (rightly so because it was oppressively hot in Boston yesterday) However...I didn't know her all that well yet, and I wasn't sure how to approach the delicate subject about needing her to spread her knees a bit in order to get the right position for her shoulders. So while I was being all timid and delicate and awkward about my wording and making sure she wore undies, she just chimed in: "oh, you need me to sit like THIS?!" (make your own mental picture hahaha) ...and now we know each other VERY well and she's my new best friend. It was hysterical! We were as modest as possible, but I think the people in Central Square did get a kick out of us. Marni is an amazing woman, folks. A native of Northern California, her Berkeley education has done her well (smartie), and led her to Emerson grad school where, among other great accomplishments, she helped write a fabulous play about the Salem Witch Trials! She's quirky and funny, but can bring down the house with Shakespeare's "Queen Anne." (I've seen it) Marni's free spirit and love of life made me wish I had spent more time with her before she moves on. She's moving to the big apple in a few weeks to be with her dashing british boyfriend, will no doubt find an amazing loft in Park Slope, a great student teaching position, and basically live a fabulous life... fitting for this fabulous woman.

There were a TON of great shots from today. Here's a few of my favs....

She actually OWNS colored shirts. It was awesome. I had such a hard time choosing because everything was so great on her brown eyes....so we kinda wore almost everything.

When she pulls her hair back it's a totally different look. Very sophisticated. And she didn't even have a mirror!

Sunday night kickdown

This is what is true...if you were not at Johnny D's on Sunday night, you absolutely missed a fantastic time. I was invited to shoot an awesome new funk/jazz/soul band called The Kickdown (http://www.myspace.com/thekickdownfunk) and they were amazing! At times it was hard to focus on my work because I was so enthralled with their talent. Recent Berklee grads, Paul and Mike, created the group and they have been playing pretty consistently throughout the Boston area all Summer. If you have an opportunity you should definitely check them out. They are both heading to NYC in the Fall to continue to study their craft so I have no doubt that in the years to come we are going to hear even more incredible music from them. Thanks for a great night! Here's a few of my favorites.

The intensity that is Alex can not be captured in a mere image. You simply have to spend time with him to understand. He's a passionate writer, kickin it old school at times with a paper and pen and devoting "white board scheduling" to keep himself on track. He's inspired by the daily occurrences of life and his mind wonders curiously about the story found in imagining who may be on the other end of a random stranger's telephone call as we walk past. Not wanting to be compared to anyone else, lest he be put into a genre box, he did offer that his work could be loosely compared to the style of well known author Brett Easton Ellis (Less than Zero, American Psycho). Not bad company to aspire to if you ask me. Alex's sarcasm and antics kept us awake when, on such a beautiful day, both of us wanted to simply take a nap on the pavement in order to recharge from our late nights. Although my excuse is a good one, he actually was up late kicking doors (totally legal, no one was hurt), but it doesn't sound at all like a way to cure writer's block! Keep an eye out for his mug on the jacket of best seller some day soon.

Boston:: Headshots: Amanda

Today rocked the house so supremely that I really don't even know where to begin. Devoting an afternoon to Amanda and shooting some headshots for her portfolio was a total blast. Wait, did we even shoot any headshots??? It's hard to recall because the day took such an interesting creative turn that the reason we were actually there became secondary! We arrived at Tom's house for makeup and 4 hours later finished the shoot...no lie. (this has never happened before, but we just couldn't stop!) We took breaks for food and chatting and primping...not me, her. As you will see below, Amanda was well cared for by Tom and she had no trouble playing the role of "yeah, I know I look good, watchu lookin at?" (sittin heavy into her Puerto Rican accent just to intimdiate. haha) But she's not just a pretty face, folks, she's a passionate, successful, stop you in your tracks with her words, poet..and I don't even like poetry, or so I thought until I read her stuff. I so appreciate her willingness to just "go with the flow" and trust me. I think it was well worth it.

Friday night was the end of the year Vernacular party (the WLP blog) and it was a blast! I am thrilled to have been asked to shoot the event. If you haven't yet checked out this great addition to the Emerson website, I hope you take the time to do so; there are tons of resources and events and musings to entertain you for hours. You can also become involved if you'd like!

If people didn't have a good time at this event it was their own fault because the team went all out. An awesome local band played, Gentlemen Hall, and brought everyone to their feet. If you are in Boston and have an opportunity to hear them play I highly recommend you go. It will not be long before they are highly sought after.

Around the World...Part II:: Boston: Emerson College

After another extra long shoot today, I gave myself permission to spend the evening with my feet up enjoying the Oscars. One problem...I couldn't do it. I was simply too excited and itching to get to my computer. So I decided to compromise and turn the T.V. up extra loud so I could still hear it while I worked. Honestly, it just seems cruel to hold out when I know so many of you are counting on seeing how today went. Let's see...what did I learn today. Well, Turkey isn't land locked! (who knew?! ha) Ok...I knew that, but the girl from Turkey gets very upset when Americans don't know things so I fool with her just to make her angry. It's fun! Oh, and I got to explain Groundhog's Day to my new friend Nick, from Greece. Try describing what a groundhog is....it's harder than you think. We came up with: "a larger version of a rat, with a shorter tail, and kind of like a gerbil, but it burrows..." hahahah
Here's two of my absolute favorites from the day!

She's a ballerina from Romania...and a photographer. I did absolutely nothing to those eyes. They're all her!

If I remember correctly his life goals are: 1. Become a famous news broadcaster in Taiwan 2. Make lots of money. 3 Go into politics. (reversing 1 & 2 would be fine too!) :)

Around the world in EIGHT hours...Part I

Ok...so I know I always sound excited when I talk about my shoots, but no lie I love my job. (and today might go down as my favorite shoot ever.) It was one of those special "gift" days life hands you when you have absolutely no idea what to expect, but it ends up being the time of you life! I shot 19 people, from roughly 17 different countries, in the span of eight hours...and I get to do it again on Sunday. AWESOME! I met the most amazing group of students and got all the "insider" tips on things to do and food to eat when I visit (to name a few) Honduras, Spain, Romania, Ecuador, Brasil, Aruba (although Aruba was holding out on me). I haven't told them yet, but I am going to go to each of their countries and STAY WITH THEM AND THEIR FAMILY...."shhhh!!" hahhhaha The poet from Tibet shared his heart while Mr. Adorable from Greece stated in no uncertain terms that "no, the Mamma Mia movie is not all there is to my country."

My trigger finger is sore and I may need surgery on my wrist, but whatever...I had such a great time today and am so blessed to have had this incredible opportunity.

It's always a bit precarious finding locations when it's winter and you can't really shoot outside, but there were so many great outdoor locations at her house that I decided we would toughen the heck up and try a few. In my opinion, they are always the best. There wasn't any real wind, so the 27 degrees didn't feel all that cold! (not even a little bit true) Jackie was a total trooper and didn't even complain...that much! She graduated last year with a degree in dance, specifically modern dance, and although I have yet to see her perform, I hear she is great.

For anyone who knows me, they are aware that I have a bit of an obsession with teeth and so I was a little distracted during our session because I have never shot anyone with such perfectly straight white teeth before. Beautiful!

We had "groupies" on Sunday...no joke. It was hysterical. Christina is one of those women who can bring in the crowds and boy did we ever have the crowd. People were literally leaning over the railing to catch a glimpse of her. I have to admit...it was kind of awesome.
Christina is a musical theater major, a gal after my own heart, and has a special affinity for the show RAGTIME. (the girl has good taste) I would love to hear her sing. If her voice is at all as powerful as her eyes... we better look out!

It's unusual to shoot on a Friday, but I'm glad we were able to fit Corinne in before the holiday. I was a bit concerned about the light, but we finished just before the sun set and I think we got some great shots....not like it was hard. (wait till ya see her smile!) She's quirky too. See, Corrine likes Medieval times. So much so in fact, that she has parties where her friends come dressed in costumes and she makes them joust in her living room...TO THE DEATH! Ok....that part isn't true, but she does have cool parties! How fun is that? She was incredibly low maintenance and up for anything we threw at her which definitely makes for a good time. And look at those eyes, my friends...gorgeous!

we actually all got in the "you being you" shot today, but I'll share that later. this one was too great to pass up sharing!

Gio is cool...he used to play in a band, he's an actor, he's nice...what more could the industry want, right? Today was the last day of family weekend and even though he would have absolutely rather been with his 9 year old twin sisters, Gio took some time out to hang with me and Tom. It ends up that he is roommates with Gabe from a few weeks ago. I can just imagine the trouble the two of them get into together. Oh yeah, he tells dirty jokes too...good times!

I am really getting a kick out of this "you being you" campaign I seem to have started. These are two "discard out-takes" from the day that I thought were too delicious to not share. Meet "the robot" and "Gio being a peach"

New place, new people, but still the same old Sundays that I love. Spending my afternoons shooting headshots is so incredibly fun for me. I love just hanging out and taking some pictures while getting to know someone new. Today I met Gabe and his Lizard face...wait that came out wrong. He showed me his crazy "lizard face" during our shoot...he doesn't have one all the time. Gabe is a freshman acting major and after spending a luxurious month at his home in Spain this summer he was well rested and ready for getting down to business at college. He has been told that his look lends itself to playing the role of the "jerky dude" in romantic comedies who the girl dates right before meeting "Mr. Right." How funny is that!?

"YES," you have seen this beautiful face before. Although, this time Sarah was much more willing to be photographed as she actually needs the photos for her fantastic website that is "coming soon." Sarah is a highly sought after consultant for major companies to help them figure out who they are and how to brand themselves in the world. She is incredibly passionate about her work, amazing at it, and still manages to be completely fabulous in every other area of her life as well. I totally took advantage of her skills and made her tell me all her secrets before I would release any photos into her hands! (sneaky) We had an awesome afternoon and I learned that if necessary I can totally create a studio in my apt! All those books I read on studio lighting have paid off. Learning is good! However, you will not see any examples here as the rain did let up for 5 mins and we hauled our butts outside and got the best shots of the day. "Overcast" is my friend!

just for my amusement as her smile is awesome, but also because the feet in the background belong to some guy who ran by us and totally thought he had it "goin on" (oy vey!)

Today was a wonderful shoot! It was my first headshot session in Boston and also my first with the incredibly fabulous makeup artist Tom Nevel. He totally rocks and makes my life so much easier. To not book him with your session is a mistake. I made the comment "oh my gosh Tom you have no idea what a big help you are" (because he was also doing tons of things other than makeup) and he responded..."I know!" It made me laugh out loud and I know we will be a great team. It's such a different experience to NOT be the one doing a million things, but only doing the ONE...taking the shot. The afternoon was terrific. Andrea looks amazing and we managed to sneak into a terrific area on campus. No one would have known except for the fact that Tom did a big "karate chop" jump off a planter and managed to go straight through the stone flooring! It was amazing and hysterical and I freaked a bit. So much so that when he turned himself in I was no where to be found lest I be implicated as an accomplice! Not proud of that, but my public apology here should suffice as debt repaid.

Sincere apologies to those of you who I know deserve correspondence from me. I have literally been all over the place in the last 6 weeks and what with unpacking and repacking and getting settled in Boston I have been a bit MIA. But not to worry, everything is now under control and I am up and running again. YAY! If I am shooting your wedding, please know that I have not forgotten and you will hear from me asap. These are two random shots from Martha's Vineyard this summer. The first of which was taken from the ferry...gosh, that was over a week ago and I haven't taken anything since! I don't know what's been taking up my time. I mean I only up and moved my entire life to a new city a week ago. (hahaha) If you have friends with kids in the Boston area spread the word. I'm so excited to get started here!

brothers and sisters

This shoot was set for my very last day in Richmond and I was a little worried about what we would do if the rain that held off the day before came down on us ! Again, the gods were kind...
I am not even kidding when I tell you that there were moments during this shoot when I was so excited that it was almost hard to contain myself. With anything you do there are times when all the elements simply "click" and it's not anything you can manipulate or control it just happens. I've been told that "luck" is when preparation meets opportunity and I really believe that is what happened with this day. Great Kids: "check" Great Weather: "check" Great Setting: "check" Great Coordinating Colors: "check" Great Grandma and Mom who occupied off camera kids: "check, check " Photographer with camera that died at one point: "check" Mini heart attack for said photographer: "check"
Ok...so the camera part was a little glitch, but it got back on track.
I am so thrilled to have had the chance to shoot these kids. Another example of family that truly loves each other. Love, love, love it!

tommy boy, tommy girl

This session almost didn't happen because of the weather, but I said a few "hail mary's" and luckily it worked. I would not have wanted to miss out on my time with these two. Brother and sister teams are always fun, but can also be challenging at times if they aren't too into each other. Luckily, that wasn't the case with this dazzling duo. They are so kind to each other and as I had the chance to get to know them a bit this summer, I can speak first hand to the fact that they are actually friends. They look out for each other and have fun together and genuinely enjoy each other. Can you IMAGINE!!!?? hahaha
If there are any agents in Virginia looking for Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren models I have two for ya right here. The moment I started browsing their session I thought to myself "they are total pros."

Their mom bribed them with the promise of a weird "person/pen" type thing if they behaved for my session....hope they got it!

The heat was oppressive my friends...but we made it through with a totally knock out session for this awesome ten week old gem. I had the best time today. Ok, I admit that having two assistants, my girlfriend who gifted the shoot to our "little" as well as the mom, made my life easier. Having always been the assistant over the years I never knew how much fun it is to be the boss. I love it! It was so much fun being able to have help and say things like "that green stuff in the background needs to go" and "that chair is ruining my life" and "we need new "talent", this baby keeps crying and ruining my chi!" Just kidding. I did keep calling her "the talent" though because in between set ups she would get her binky, and a hug, and told she is beautiful. (just like hollywood only their "binky" might be a vodka tonic or something) Seriously this was one of my favorite shoots ever. The mom was open to letting me do whatever I wanted and I certainly took advantage and let my creativity flow.
Thanks Mrs. H! And to the other Mrs. H...that's for comin along and helpin out.

"C"-easons of Love Part II

I know...part II was supposed to have come a while ago. Forgive me! Life got in the way a little bit. I've been busy working on my website, staging a house to sell, going to great restaurants, (if you're in Richmond definitely check out Kuba Kuba!) and taking photo field trips in order to document this precious time I've had in VA. I can't believe it's almost over. I'm actually a little sad to leave. I've met some great people here and wish life didn't move so quickly some times. Today I spent most of the day at the river jumping on rocks and basically just playing and catching some rays. It was awesome. I highly recommend a day at the water to anyone who needs some "me time" like I did today.
So here are a few images where you can actually get a view of this awesome "little."
Isn't he great?! He had such a great personality for a little guy. What a fun afternoon that was!

I appreciate that you come here to see my work and it is my pleasure to introduce you to a few of my personal favorite children's photographers who are totally rocking this industry. These three women are fantastic and I hope you take a few mins to check out their work. (click on their names to link to their sites) Each of them is a full time mother and wife, yet manages to also give 100% to the other "littles" in their lives..their adorable clients. I was already inspired simply by their work, but to have coffee and go on photo field trips has been such a thrill for me. I hope when I am in their position and someone comes to me as a newcomer that I will be as gracious and generous as they have all been to me.

Book soon if you want her! She may be in San Francisco before too long. She's awesome and a superhero mother of two adorable girls.

My favorite shot of the day was of Stacey's daughter's chubby little legs. So cute...plus, I'm a sucker for feet!

Oh...and the "hot shoe" thing is a little shout out to Conrad Erb. I'm not sure how much money he saved me, but a ton in psychological therapy I'm sure. I thought I was going crazy because my camera stopped recognizing my flash in certain positions and I consulted with numerous photographers and none could help me. A call to Canon Customer Service resulted in the "hot shoe" revelation and a few mins on the web brought me to Conrad. His site told me step by step how to fix it and I DID!!!! All on my own!!!! YAY! I was thrilled and am so grateful that the information was out there.

Isn't life great when we all just help each other out? I love it!

"C"-easons of Love Part I

A fitting title since in the midst of composing this post I am listening to the Tony awards and they are going to do a tribute to the record breaking rock musical, RENT. I'm calling this Part I as I have a few more images which actually show baby "Cs" face, but as it's dad's day I wanted to get this one up before the day is completely passed! I don't know about the rest of you, but for me there is just something that touches my heart when I see a father spending time with his kids. The conversations are just different than they are with mom. Dads are just different. And there's nothing like seeing a new dad. He may not know anything for sure other than the fact that his capacity to love has increased ten-fold over night...oh and that "Babies come with hats."

All in the family

This incredibly beautiful family, both inside and out, were hard to say goodbye to. This session was a few weeks ago, but as they had ordered an album I wanted them to be completely surprised when they received it. Posting images here would only lead to temptation for them and it's just so much more fun when you can be totally surprised. Over the last few months their faith and trust in both myself and my work was a blessing. It afforded me the luxury of trying new things and taking risks when in other circumstances I may hold back. While my time in Pittsburgh is done I take with me some incredible lessons for both life and my photography. Many thanks to all of the old families/old friends/new families/new friends I had the pleasure to meet. I am inspired by your lives and it is my personal goal to tell the stories of your children in images that reveal to you the beauty of the lives you have chosen to bring into this world.

in the arms of a woman

My first newborn...ish. He's about 6 weeks old, but I am going to say that it still counts. He's only experienced one season so far and I've decided that's my barometer! I had such fun with him. I can't wait until he starts talking. His mother is British, but his father is from the states so I am incredibly curious whether he'll say "where's the water closet" with classic "Pittsburgh twang" mixed into upper crust English sophistication. He's no doubt going to be a heartbreaker. During this session I was very drawn to the emotion of his mother's hand on his back. I even added his father's hand to it for a few. I dedicated quite a few frames to this, but there was something so honest and nurturing in its simplicity. The beauty of his contentment was amazing. I had a good feeling about the shots, but not until I got home did I realize what a gift he had given my lens. All he understands is that he can just exist in the arms of his mother and his world is perfect. Part of me wants to keep him there forever.

"Alright already...I know I know ! " I don't post often enough. I'm working on it. It's not that I don't WANT it's that sometimes time just gets away from me. I have several shoots to post from being out of town for the last 10 days and I promise to do it this week. But I digress....today I have no excuse. With 4 hours until my flight back to Penguin territory (any sports fans out there) I have already tired of the bumble-gum novel and pop psychology self-help book I brought along for amusement. EW's issue on "Carrie Bradshaw and the girls" was finished well before even getting here so I can just focus on introducing you to "the next big thing !"
It's BJ! At 15 he's really got his act together. Not only is he an awesome athlete, but a musician and actor and positive role model to boot. With his attitude and talent the future holds great things for him.
You'd think he would be self conscious with his peers walking around while we shot, but he was totally cool about it. Check out those eyes ladies.

I figured it out...sort of

so it's clear that I have learned SOMETHING..."vertically" that is. Awww well....I'll figure out the sizing of horizontals another time. ok....in actuality it's still cropping too much and I'm not happy with it, but I couldn't put off posting any longer and what with traveling to 3 states over the next 7 days I will just have to put off my learning until another day... Of course once I started tinkering with my layout I couldn't stop. I changed everything, then changed it back, then changed the heading. It's addicting! One day the images will be just how I want them. Until then I'll just keep workin on it.

kids say the darndest things...

In case you have not recently been around kids who are potty training allow me to bring you up to speed. Kids like to talk about poop. Ok, even as adults it's fun to talk about it sometimes, but a kid who is just figuing it all out is incredibly funny and candid about their fascination with "all things rectum" if you will. Additionally, because parents are so incredibly exasperated during this process they usually have no other recourse than to resort to bribing their children to "use the potty." At which point the child is rewarded with stickers or transformers or t.v. time or in the case of the conversation being written about here...GUM.
For the sake of anonymity I will just call this boy "the little" He made it very clear to me that GUM was his reward and he loved it. Bright Yellow gum is the best.
THIS ENTIRE EXCHANGE IS 100% TRUE and happened to me on Friday

the little: "do you poop on the potty?"

me: "Yes, indeed I do"

the little: "that's awesome"

me: "Yep"

the little: "do you have GUM at your house?"

me: (begin laughing hysterically)
2nd grade is so hard!!!

flat on my back for 5 days straight

I only wish it were for some glamorous reason like a sailing accident or skiing injury. Heck even a sprained ankle due to a fall while attempting the tango in Jimmy Choos would be better than the truth. The truth being that both bronchitis and the flu kicked my butt this week. In 30 years I don't ever remember being this sick.
As opposed to many other experiences I've had THIS one I do not in fact recommend to others. Well...I'll spare you the details and you can be thankful. I know I know what do I expect working with kids, right?

I was desperate to work on a few recent pics and share a couple. Aren't these two little guys adorable?
